Whether you work in hospitality, retail, healthcare, wineries, farming, construction, or simply spend long hours moving around, being on your feet all day can take a toll on your body.
Tired feet, aching heels, sore arches, and leg fatigue are common complaints we see at FootPrint Health across the Barossa Valley. The good news is that a few simple habits can help keep your feet healthier and more comfortable.
1. Choose Supportive Footwear
Your shoes are your foundation.
Look for shoes that offer:
Good arch support
Cushioning and shock absorption
A firm heel counter (back of the shoe)
Adequate width and toe space
Non-slip soles if working on hard surfaces
Avoid worn-out shoes, as cushioning and support reduce over time.
2. Rotate Your Footwear
Wearing the same shoes every day can increase pressure on the same areas of the foot.
Try to:
- Alternate between 2–3 pairs of supportive shoes
- Allow shoes time to air out and recover
- Replace footwear when tread or support wears down
3. Stretch Your Calves and Feet Daily
Tight calf muscles can contribute to foot pain, heel pain, and plantar fasciitis.
Simple stretches may include:
• Calf stretches against a wall
• Rolling the foot over a massage ball
• Toe and arch mobility exercises
• Gentle ankle movements
Even 5 minutes per day can make a difference.
4. Take Movement Breaks
Standing still for long periods can sometimes be harder on the body than walking.
If possible:
Change position regularly
Walk briefly every hour
Alternate tasks when available
Sit down during breaks and elevate feet
Small changes can reduce fatigue through the feet and legs.
5. Don’t Ignore Early Pain
Foot pain is not something you should just “push through.”
Common issues we help with include:
- Heel pain / plantar fasciitis
- Arch pain
- Achilles tendon pain
- Forefoot pain
- Corns and calluses
- Ingrown toenails
- Sports and work-related foot injuries
Early treatment often means faster recovery.
6. Consider Orthotics or Foot Assessment
If you regularly finish the day with sore feet, knees, hips, or lower back pain, a podiatry assessment may help identify contributing factors such as:
- Foot posture and biomechanics
- Pressure distribution
- Footwear suitability
- Walking pattern (gait) issues
Targeted treatment and footwear advice can often make long workdays much more comfortable.
